GILROY – Despite a steady rain that pelted the field throughout its game Tuesday in Gilroy, and talking the field with just eight players, the Anchorpoint Christian softball team bombarded visiting Marina 17-2 in five innings in a Coastal Division matchup.
“I’m proud of the girls for playing with eight players and still getting 17 runs,” manager Alicia Hernandez said. “We could have canceled today, but I wanted to play.”
Taking to the circle for the just the second time this season, Erinique Duyao struck out eight to secure the win, and all eight Lady Warriors reached base and scored at least once.
The win propels Anchorpoint to 2-1 in league play and 4-4 overall.
With the rain falling, the Lady Warriors didn’t wait around to do some damage at the plate, batting around in the bottom of the first inning to produce four runs.
Duyao and Brooke Shrull started the barrage with back-to-back singles to start the game. Adrianna Osuna, who just accepted an academic scholarship from New Mexico State University, took a pitch off the back of her knee, and just like that the bases were loaded. Danielle Kinoshita plated Duyao for the first run for the Lady Warriors with a fielder’s- choice groundout. Shrull, Osuna and Haley Ball also scored in the inning.
Anchorpoint tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second, five in the third and five in the fourth.
In the third inning, Osuna belted an inside pitch deep to left field, rounding the bases for a home run. She also deposited a two-RBI double in the fourth.
Osuna finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, Duyao had two hits, Kinoshita contributed two hits and two RBI. Michelle Parra and Ball also had two base knocks, Melissa Delia walked three times and Becca Huerta had a hit and a run scored.
The Lady Warriors continue a busy week of play with two away games starting today at York.
