GILROY – The Sparks handed defending champion Above The Rim its first loss in Women’s League 2003-4 play Wednesday, powering to a 30-23 victory in Gilroy Community Services Department adult basketball action at Solorsano Gymnasium.

Melanie Arner scored eight points and Shanah Keyes delivered seven as the Sparks built a 19-8 lead by halftime. Keyes took game scoring honors with 10 points. Christi Ledesma scored seven points, Laura Given and Michelle Deleissegues six points each for Above The Rim. The Sparks and Above The Rim share first place at 3-1 with two weeks left in the first half of the season.

Williams Dental Lab remained in pennant contention at 2-2 with a 34-23 nod over R. J. Dyer Real Property Investments.

Christina Castillo netted a game-high 13 points for the Lab, including five successful free throws in the second half as Williams expanded a 13-11 lead. Maureen Hughes added seven points to the Williams Dental Lab cause. Karen Turnlund worked inside for 12 points for R.J. Dyer.

The Playaz topped the Titans 55-42 Thursday to produce a three-team tie atop the Men’s E League.

Ed Gamboa scored 24 points to lead the Playaz to a 3-2 mark with one week to play in the half. The Playaz face Gilroy Young Plants, another 3-2 club, Thursday at 9:15 p.m. at Solorsano School. Arnold Tellez struck for 18 points, Craig Courtney 12 for the 3-2 Titans.

Robert Silvia scored 22 points and Matt McIntyre hit two three-point field goals on the way to 21 points as Gilroy Young Plants topped the Sand Pit 69-51. Adolfo Mirelos tallied 26 Sand Pit points.

Cordevalle upset Headstart Nursery 43-33 Wednesday to drop the Nurserymen into a tie for first place in the Men’s D League standings.

Mike Martinez hit three 3-pointers in the first half on the way to 17 points for Cordevalle. Daniel Crowe added 12 points as Cordevalle moved to 2-2. Headstart, led by John Blaettler’s 14 points, is 3-1.

Beale Properties climbed into a share of first place at 3-1 with a 60-40 victory over Pro Electric-Gavilan Honda-Rio Nilo Thursday. Shawn Teacher poured in 18 points, Armando Ocampo 16 and Brit Bigelow 14 for Beale. Alexis Rivas tallied 16 points, Andres Espinosa 14 for the losers.

Gaeta’s Taqueria maintained a one-game lead in the Men’s C league race with a 61-37 victory over Triple Threat Tuesday.

Mark Cisneros anchored the Gaeta’s offense with 22 points. Mmark Meeham scored 12 points for Gaeta’s (3-1).

FFC defeated Pizza N Stuff 59-41 to leave both teams at 2-2 with two weeks to play in the first half.

Sergio Montenegro carried the FFC attack with 23 points. Shawn Hennessy aided the FFC cause with 13 points, including three 3-pointers in the second half. Miguel Gilliard scored 19 points and Donte Fullard added 11 for Pizza N Stuff.
