Gilroy – In Saturday’s 16-team Harbor High Tournament, the Gilroy boys volleyball team had the opportunity to avenge some losses that came earlier in the season.

The Mustangs didn’t let the opportunity go to waste.

En route to a 4-2 tournament record and a second place finish in the championship bracket, the ‘Stangs dispatched Monterey 25-20, 23-25, 15-10 and SH-Cathedral Prep 25-19, 17-25, 15-11.

“This is the best performance any Gilroy boys volleyball team has given in a tournament in the last six years I have coached them,” said head coach Craig Martin.

Both of Gilroy’s losses came at the hands of CCS sixth-ranked team Serra. In pool play, Serra defeated Gilroy 25-18, 25-18. The Mustangs came up short once again in the championship match 25-21, 25-19.

Ryan Chisholm (50 kills, 2 aces, 1 block) and Vinnie DeLorenzo (40 kills, 5 assists, 4 blocks, 2 aces) led the Mustang attack at the tourney. Setter Patrick Largo had 83 assists, 9 blocks, 8 kills and 2 aces. Other contributors were Steven Good (13 kills, 13 blocks) and Dominic Jackson (21 blocks, 8 kills).
