Welcome to April! Happy/Hoppy Easter on the 20th!

As you know from previous columns, 2025 will be my last year with you as your South Valley bicycle columnist. I will dearly miss many things about this assignment, especially the privilege of sharing the local bike scene with you.

Additionally, I have no doubt that Aprils to come will always remind me of one particular perk that I loved about this job: the media pass!

Words cannot possibly explain the pride and power a writer feels when sporting a media pass. To the untrained eye, it’s just a piece of plastic dangling from a colorful lanyard; to a writer, it’s a key unlocking a world of bountiful buffets, backstage benefits and a bevy of other bonuses.

During my quarter century as your South Valley (née Out & About) Magazine columnist, I’ve collected numerous media passes, from everything from the San Francisco Grand Prix to the Amgen Tour of California; my favorites, however, are those from the Sea Otter Classic!

I KNOW that you’ll be attending the Sea Otter Classic this month; I’ve been singing its praises for the past 24 years! By now, you know that it is considered by many to be the world’s largest cycling event, drawing about 9,000 professional and amateur athletes, as well as more than 70,000 fans.

This year’s dates are April 10-13; and trust me, four days are needed to fit in all of the excitement: races, demos, exhibitions, vendors, otter-egg hunts, contests and more.

The SOC caters to everyone from the seasoned pro down to the youngest cyclo-tot.
