Each week we recognize one area male and female athlete for their performance on the field of play. This week's are:

Four Gavilan soccer players receive all-conference honors

The Gavilan College men's soccer season ended Nov. 11, but the signs left behind tell of a turnaround campaign that included the most wins in program history. Led by first-year head coach Justin Johnson, the Rams finished 2011 with an 11-8-1 record - 7-7 in the Coast Conference - and received four selections to the postseason all-conference list.

BASKETBALL: Rams close gap, can’t finish in loss to MPC

In the second half of Friday night's game against visiting Monterey Peninsula College, the Gavilan men's basketball team chipped away at an 11-point deficit, sculpting a manageable four-point dilemma with plenty of time to spare. In workman-like fashion, the Rams again pulled themselves to the surface with another four-point climb ahead after the Lobos had stretched their lead back to 10 midway through.
