In search of its 10th consecutive section championship, Gilroy High (227.5) holds a 98.5-point lead over second-place Palma (122) heading into tonight’s Central Coast Section wrestling finals, which begin at 7 p.m. at Independence High in San Jose.

Gilroy High sits in first place and will have seven wrestlers in the semifinals after the first day of the Central Coast Section Championships on Friday at Independence in San Jose. The Mustangs have 123.5 points, while second place Palma has 86 points. Meanwhile, Christopher High is in 14th with two wrestlers through to the semis.

Two weeks have passed since Gilroy High wrestlers Megan Nebesnick and Jennifer Garcia last hit the mat at the Central Coast Section Championships. Two weeks of training and preparation in the books. And now, Nebesnick, the section champ at 189 pounds, and Garcia, the bronze medalist at 126 pounds, will put their skills to the test at the second annual CIF State Girls Wrestling Invitational Championships on Friday and Saturday at Lemoore High School.

Twenty-four hours after scoring its sixth consecutive Tri-County Athletic League title, the Gilroy High girls soccer team was handed the No. 8-seed into the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs. Meanwhile, Christopher High, which finished runner-up in the Monterey Bay League, drew the No. 12-seed in Div. II.

The 2011-12 season didn't go according to original plan for the Gilroy High boys varsity basketball team. But as the Mustangs have done throughout, they put forth maximum effort against visiting Salinas in the Tri-County Athletic League finale for both teams on Senior Night Friday in Gilroy.
