GILROY — The Christopher girls tennis team that Gilroy saw wasn’t the same one from earlier in the season. No, this team was much, much better.

SALINAS —  This wasn’t the start that Christopher was hoping for entering league play.

The Christopher girls golf team is No. 1 — literally. 

GILROY — North Monterey County didn’t beat Gilroy. Gilroy beat itself.

The Christopher girls tennis team was at full strength and it showed. The Cougars defeated Parajo Valley 6-1 Tuesday at home. The No.1, 2 and 4 singles players all left victorious as did both doubles team.  No. 1 Emily Barham won easily 6-0, 6-2 as did No. 2 Adena Chen who won 6-2. No. 4 singles player Jade Bardrick had a bit of a tougher time with her set going to three matches, but emerged the winner 4-6, 6-4, 1006. The No. 1 doubles team of Tiffany Roberts and Kaitlyn Lombardo won their match 7-5, 6-1. Renata Vasconcelos and Kelly Nantais, the No. 2 team, downed their opponents 6-3, 6-2.  Christopher will play at Gilroy High at 4 p.m. Thursday.  Notre Dame shuts down Gilroy The Gilroy tennis team fell 2-5 to Notre Dame Tuesday at home. No. 1 Amiti Munshi won her match in three sets for Gilroy as did the No. 1 doubles team of Caitlin Filice-Hollar and Nicole Holder who won 2-0 against their opponent.  The Mustangs will be back in action at 4 p.m. Thursday to host Christopher.  FIELD HOCKEY Christopher edges Monterey The Christopher field hockey team went to battle at Monterey Tuesday and came out on top. The Cougars picked up a narrow 1-0 victory to improve to 7-1 in league play (8-3 overall). The lone goal was scored by Sherelle Butler off a shot from Melanie Tanaka as time expired in the first half. Christopher will be back in action at 3:30 p.m. Friday at York.  BOYS WATER POLO

The Gilroy cross country team got a taste of what to expect at the Central Coast Section Championships this year.

SALINAS — That 0-2 start the Vikings had has fast disappeared from their virtual rearview mirror.

Santa Catalina had 35 straight wins heading into Thursday's contest against Christopher, but the Cougars put an end to that.  The Christopher girls golf team topped Santa Catalina 257-265 Thursday at Gilroy Golf Course.  Natalie Gutierrez scored at 47 to lead the Cougars against S.C. Julie Santiago shot a 52, Kylie Kuwada a 52, Nina Velez a 53, Alex Granados a 54 and Mia Navarro a 62. Navarro drove No. 17 green to get her first official birdie.  S.C.'s Chloe Corriveau was the medalist, shooting a 38.   CROSS COUNTRY

Gilroy's Taylor Silacci was hard at work Wednesday, helping her team stay undefeated.

Christopher’s Bella Marquez did her job in the cage and then got to test her skills on offense — and she came out firing.
