When Monica Ruelas finished Wednesday’s Monterey Bay League Center Meet No. 1 race at Toro Park, there was no one else in sight. The Mustang runner finished more than a minute ahead of the second place finisher to take the top prize. Ruelas finished the race in 20:51.

GILROY —  Christopher looked like it was going to escape Scotts Valley with a victory, but maybe that was the problem.

Throughout the first eight games of the year, the San Benito boys soccer team had trouble finishing and putting away teams. Against Christopher on Tuesday, the Balers did just that in a 3-0 win. After a back and forth first half, where neither team could score despite constant pressure on both sides of the field, San Benito took control in the second half.

GILROY — For both Gilroy and Christopher, Wednesday’s crosstown game was about improvement.
