BAKERSFIELD – Paul Fox and Nikko Villarreal have led Gilroy High’s wrestling team all season.

Gilroy High’s wrestling team and Oakwood’s girls basketball team have been honored with Central Coast Section Winter Season Scholastic Championship Team Awards, the CCS announced.

Winning pitcher Lauren Castro pitched five scoreless innings, and Kaylana Mah and Anna Gamboa had two hits each to help Gilroy High’s softball team open the season with a 4-0 home win over Santa Teresa on Wednesday.

Brendan Spillane scored in the first half to lead Sacred Heart Prep’s boys soccer team to a 1-0 win over Gilroy High in the semifinals of the Central Coast Section Division III playoffs Wednesday night at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.

Elaina Vasquez and Abby Holtzclaw each homered and Samantha Ribeiro and Kari Bittle had two hits each, but Gavilan College’s softball team suffered a 10-4 home loss to Hartnell on Tuesday.

Gabe Katich pitched seven scoreless innings, former Christopher star Bryant Cid doubled twice and scored three runs, and former Live Oak standout Connor Sutton had three hits to lead Gavilan College’s baseball team to a 9-3 win at Skyline on Tuesday.

Gavilan College’s men’s basketball team ended the season with a 71-52 home loss to Hartnell on Friday.

Breanna Hernandez scored 15 points, but Gavilan College’s women’s basketball team suffered a season-ending 59-26 home loss to San Mateo on Friday.

For nearly six innings, San Benito was far from the team that’s expected to challenge for a Central Coast Section title Monday against Gilroy. In the only game this year against rival Mustangs, the Balers couldn’t find a way inside the strike zone – walking eight batters – and couldn’t take advantage of their offensive opportunities.
