BASKETBALL: Rams back in action
The Gavilan College women's basketball team played its first game Tuesday under new head coach Erik Nelson, who is rebuilding the program from scratch. It was the first game the team has played since the 2004-05 season.
FIELD HOCKEY: One stroke away
Gilroy's season came to a close Tuesday in the Central Coast Section semifinals by the narrowest of margins. The No. 3 Mustangs lost 2-1 in the second 5-on 5 shootout to No. 2 Mitty. The Monarchs won the shootout 4-3 on their final shot.

The Gavilan soccer team will open the first round of the NorCal state regional playoffs as the No. 10 seed by playing at 2 p.m. Saturday at No. 7 Modesto Junior College.

As a freshman, Christopher’s Jamie Boutte didn’t know what to expect entering Saturday’s Central Coast Section cross country championship at Toro Park in Salinas. Her head coach, Mike Bonomi, wasn’t sure what he was going to see from the young freshman on the section stage.

Gilroy High field hockey's first endeavor on its quest for a third consecutive appearance in the Central Coast Section championship game went off without a hitch in the quarterfinals Saturday, as the third-seeded Mustangs eased past No. 11 Presentation 4-0 at Lynbrook High School in San Jose.

A depleted Gavilan College Rams football squad completed a 3-7 season Saturday afternoon at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex by dropping a 52-7 Coast Conference game to the visiting Cabrillo Seahawks.

FIELD HOCKEY: Leigh ends Christopher’s season in CCS first round
It was a bittersweet ending for a team that had accomplished so much in its early history. But in its postseason debut, No. 8 Christopher (12-1-2) lost 3-0 to No. 9 Leigh (8-6-1) Thursday evening in the first round of the Central Coast Section playoffs.
