GILROY – A field of 12 teams will compete Sunday for the championship of the third annual Spring 16 Softball Tournament on four local fields.
The record turnout for the event, which features the use of a 16-inch softball rather than the 11 and 12-inch softballs used in women’s and men’s slowpitch play, will conclude with the finals at Christmas Hill at 5 p.m.
The double-elimination tournament was made possible by the assistance of eight companies and organizations. Donating to the 16-inch event were Mize Fastpitch, HMI, Sport Shack, Elam Trucking, Century 21 Premier, Cary O’Neal Roofing, California Silk Screening and Fritter-Schulz Physical Therapy.
Games will begin at 9 a.m. at four sites. Dee’s Nuts will play the Chippendales at Christmas Hill’s minor diamond, while Mikey’s faces Dirty Dozen at the Ranch Site. Las Animas Park’s major field opens with Krazy Koyotes against the Red Dogz, while the Stray Cats and Jolly Pranksters play on the Las Animas Minor diamond.
Set to begin play at 10:10 a.m. are Poor Sports-FOG, the Playaz, Lopez Vending Machines and Let’s Do This.
The $40 per team event includes a 70-minute time limit and 10-run rule. Both men and women may play, although a man must pitch. The infielder and battery must use gloves.
