Eighth graders at St. Mary School baked and decorated more than 150 cupcakes on March 30 and delivered them to the residents of Wheeler Manor. They even delivered cupcakes door to door at the residence community for those who were unable to make it to the dining room.
The cupcake baking and delivery is part of the eighth graders’ Lenten Project and an extension of Project Cornerstone, a literature-based program which trains volunteer parents to go into classrooms to read selected books, initiate discussions and lead projects that focus on issues like respect, tolerance, peaceful conflict resolution, honesty, caring, and friendship.
Earlier in March, St. Mary School parent Ann Fiorio talked to the students about a web site, 40acts, which offers ways groups can give back to make Lent meaningful in their lives. As a class, students watched a video, which featured cupcake baking and distribution as an act of love and kindness.
The students were inspired, and Mrs. Fiorio immediately offered to host a Sunday afternoon cupcake baking party. She recruited neighbors to donate the use of their ovens, and the students who participated baked, decorated, and distributed the finished product to seniors at Wheeler Manor. The students were profoundly moved by their simple gesture being so lovingly received.
“It felt good to give people something,” said Angela Martin, St. Mary School eighth grader. All of the elderly people were very nice and very thankful that we did that.”
