What’s up at happy dog?

Red Phone: Dear Caller, Red Phone took a peek back a few weeks to some reporting Emily Alpert did on Happy Dog and learned that the eatery is undergoing some significant renovation. But do not fret, dear caller, the restaurant is due to reopen Monday, according to the restaurant’s Web site, with a beautiful updated interior. And Happy Dog’s chef has refreshed its menu with new items, and the owner has added automated darts, an Internet jukebox and bar-top game consoles in the upstairs lounge.
Our tails they are a waggin’.
Crossing the bridge
We live near where they are building the new Las Animas School and we have been going on walks on the levy, and crossing over the bridge is a really big concern because there is very limited space for children crossing that bridge – it doesn’t feel safe because there is one limited bike lane. Who would I contact about getting a bike trail or bike path so students who live on the other side of the bridge can safely get to school?
Red Phone: Dear Caller, Red Phone appreciates your concern for the safety of our community’s children.
We contacted city of Gilroy traffic engineer Don Dey, who told us he is in discussions with the Gilroy Unified School District to see how to get some kind of raised sidewalk over the Luchessa Street bridge to make it safer for pedestrians in time for the new school to open.
We’ll report the progress in those talks. In the meantime, keep enjoying your walks along the levy; it’s one of the many jewels of Gilroy.
Volunteers help keep city clean
I’m the lady who called in about the trash not being picked up on Alexander Street. A guy called in with a complaint about my “mocking the people in their little suits.”
I was one of those volunteers and was helping my father. It was just a ‘girlie’ comment, not a mocking one. I do appreciate having the service and I am proud of my neighborhood.
Red Phone: Dear Caller, not to worry, just a misunderstanding. Thanks for clarifying that. Red Phone is just glad Gilroy has people like you and the other caller who care about our town. Keep up the good work.
St. paddy’s day noise
RP: Why were we treated to over half an hour of noisy fireworks Saturday evening, March 17 in southwest Gilroy?
No self-respecting Irishman would inflict that kind of noise on his neighbors on this special day!
Red Phone: Dear Caller, well, St. Paddy’s Day is a time for all to be a little Irish, so there is no way to tell whether the pyrotechnics were set off by a self-respecting Irishman or a self-loathing Englishman.
We do know that this town is filled with middle-aged little boys and teenage toddlers who can’t seem to get enough of their bang-bang toys. We hope the rest of the year prior to the Fourth of July is much quieter for you Dear Caller.
