Gilroy – With such stiff competition surrounding her at the CCS Finals meet, Gilroy gymnast Samantha Nussbaumer could have caved to pressure.
But the junior didn’t, and instead delivered a solid season-ending floor exercise performance at Twisters Gym in Mountain View Friday evening.
“She handled (the pressure) very well,” gymnastics head coach Nicki Anagnoston said. “I think that was one of her main strengths and it allowed her to do the routine she was capable of.”
Though her 8.75 only earned her a tie for 41st place, it was a one-tenth of a point improvement over her qualifying score for the meet.
“She had a good performance. The competition was real tough,” Anagnoston said. “I think the main goal was to be there and then at that point, it was to have a strong outcome. All her skills were real clean.”
With her varsity teammates cheering her on, Nussbaumer performed her routine to Britney Spears’ “Toxic,” as she has all season.
Anagnoston said the junior’s tumbling was the highlight of the routine.
“She’s a strong, fast tumbler,” Anagnoston said. “She’s improved her dance quite a bit and her leap series has much improved since beginning of season. She accomplished a lot as far as improving her routine that night.”
Kaylyn Reyes of Gunn took first in floor exercise with a 9.875. Saint Francis’ Linda Lund won the all-around competition with a score of 39.025 and the vault with a 9.75. Individual titles also went to Gunn’s Miranda Der (9.9, balance beam) and San Mateo’s Alice Kao (9.925, uneven parallel bars).
Saint Francis (189.675) beat out Aragon (183.8) for the team title.
