GILROY – Gilroy High field hockey was a perfect 10 against visiting York Tuesday afternoon, winning by that exact number while shutting out the visitors.
Were it not for a tie with Leigh in a tournament earlier this season, the Mustangs would be perfect on the season. The team is currently 17-0-1.
Six different players scored for Gilroy, with Elise Ogle coming away with three for the hat trick. Mandi Jo Torrez and Jennifer Rose followed with two goals each, and Dani Hemeon, Jenna Vivian and Aubrey Young rounded out the scoring with a goal apiece.
In total, the Mustangs had 28 shots on goal while not allowing a single York shrike to be taken on Gilroy goalie Geralyn Moon.
Coach Adam Gemar thought his squad came out focused despite knowing an easy victory was likely to occur.
“You try to get the intensity high and get ready for the playoffs,” he said. “I thought we did some different looks (offensively) that we put in 15 minutes before the game, and they looked good.”
The Mustangs have three more weeks of regular season play before the Central Coast Section playoffs begin in the second week of November. Even though Gilroy has beaten all of the other top CCS teams, Gemar was hesitant to say his squad will be seeded No. 1.
The Mission Trail Athletic League, which Gilroy is now sure to win for the eighth straight season, isn’t viewed as an upper echelon league by the CCS selection committee. Coaches from around the section are the architects of the playoff brackets.
However, wining impressively at Carmel on Tuesday at 4 p.m., and adding another victory over Archbishop Mitty, a team Gilroy beat 2-0 in September, could bolster the Mustangs’ claim that they deserve the top seed.
