I’m usually not a very superstitious person, but a weird occurrence more than a year ago has me wondering about my fate in the future.

And, according to one strange figure, my life may change very soon.

The whole strange story began with one night at a restaurant near my old home in Colorado. One summer evening, we had just finished playing a round of golf (I was unemployed, so I spend most of my days out on the golf course). After 18 holes, we usually would go and find a place to grab a bite to eat and have a drink or two. While we were there, an eccentric woman came and sat down at the end of the bar.

For the life of me, I can’t remember what her name was, but I still can remember almost word-for-word what she said to me.

When she first walked into the door, we could tell she was different. Appearing to be in her 40s or 50s, she was wearing clothes I thought almost would be more suited for an elegant woman aboard the Titanic. She had a big floppy-looking hat on, a black dress with a large shiny broach pinned to it. She wore a lot of makeup, but most of her face seemed to disappear in the shadow of the brim of the hat. Unless you were close to her, all you could see was her mouth under the lighting of the bar.

She said something about having to entertain a group of Mormons all night long and that she had been dying for a drink all night long. And before too long, she was entertaining us, as well.

I was sitting between my friends, Chris and Beau, and she had taken a seat at the corner of the bar next to Chris and began to make small talk with him. When Chris excused himself to go to the restroom, she spoke up and called me over.

Reluctantly, I slid over a seat, wondering what I was getting myself into. To my surprise she began to tell me a whole list of things about my friends and about our futures.

She had told me how Chris had been born with a silver spoon in his mouth – that his parents bought him everything he really wanted and that everything really came easily to him. She also knew that he had a girlfriend who she said was smarter than he was and surely would gain a higher academic degree than he would.

She hit it right on the head. Chris’ parents take very good care of him, and his girlfriend, starting this fall, will be going to graduate school.

Then she talked about me. She said that I was a kind person, but I needed to stop thinking negatively about myself – which I tend to do from time to time.

I decided to ask her what I really wanted to know: Was I ever going to get a job, or was I bound to play golf and live on my sister’s couch forever. Unfortunately, all she said was that would work itself out in time. Instead, she decided to talk to me about my love life, which was possibly more of a train wreck than my inability to get a job. She told me that I would meet my future wife the next fall and that we would be married four or five years later.

That means it’s supposed to be this fall.

Anyway, onto Beau. Well, Beau didn’t get the best of fortunes from the lady. Let’s just say that Chris and I were asked to look out for our friend during the next few years. Poor ol’ Beau. That’s a whole other story on it’s own.

She offered to pay for our drinks that night, and while my friends were all for it, I told her thanks but we could take care of it ourselves.

Within a few weeks, I had a job offer from The Gilroy Dispatch, and I got a fortune cookie message at dinner that night that read: “It’s time to try something new.”

While the lady kinda freaked me out for a while, I had pretty much forgotten about it until this week, when Beau called me to tell me he remembered what the lady said and to keep an eye out.

So, if she was right, it’s about time for that special girl to come a calling. After all, the lady wasn’t wrong about anything else, yet.
