Madison Diane Wahl

Madison Diane Wahl, a 17-year-old senior at GECA, is this week’s Student of the Week.
What inspires you?
The children at my church inspire me. I usually spend Sunday mornings with them during their “Children’s Chapel,” and it is so amazing to me how insightful they are. I walk away each time with a sense of wonder and a passion to further change in the world.
Favorite subject:
Currently my favorite subject is Calculus. It is difficult to say that, because I spent the majority of my high school career hating math with a passion. However, it has all clicked this year and I love the way math works together perfectly to create an entirely new language. Everything works together and is related, which I love. I feel like it’s a really, really well-kept secret, but once it is discovered, it totally turns your world upside down.
If you had the power to change one thing in the world:
Wow. If I had the power to change one thing in the world, it would probably be to provide all people with the healthcare and medicine that they need. It seems very idealistic, I know. However, the lack of proper medical care, especially in third-world countries, is the cause of so much strife and distress. I don’t think anyone should have to be without the basic things that will keep them healthy and able.
If you could go anywhere in the world:
If I could go anywhere in the world right now, it would be to Ithaca, New York to visit my brother. He is a freshman at Cornell University and left home in June. It is freezing this time of year, which I do not like at all. I typically prefer an 80 degree day on a white sand beach. However, I miss my brother a lot and I would love to be able to go out and see what his life back east is all about.
Name one big challenge in your life right now:
One big challenge in my life right now is getting enough sleep. Time management is not my strong suit, so I often find myself staying up into the morning to get my assignments done.
Dream job:
My dream job is practicing medicine in a French-speaking developing country.
Your three favorite things:
My family, Starbucks, and the beach.
Favorite book:
My favorite book is “Lolita” by Vladimir Nabokov.
Plans post high school:
After high school I plan on attending a four-year university and then going on to medical school to become a doctor.
Something that makes you smile:
My little brothers make me smile. They are 5, 3, and 2, and are some of my favorite people in the world. I can’t imagine what college is going to be like without them.
Top three songs on your iPod or iTunes:
“National Anthem” by Lana del Rey, “Play it Again” by Luke Bryan, and “Waiting Game” by Banks.
