Dear Editor:

A few nights ago I was attacked by an unknown perpetrator while walking in the early evening.

Luckily, I was not seriously injured. But the way it made me feel will affect me for the rest of my life. That night is replayed in my head over and over again. I was unsure about reporting this incident, until a good friend, a pastor at a nearby church, made me realize that if I didn’t report it, someone else could be less fortunate. Although the police tried to understand my situation, I don’t think they filed a report and it didn’t sound like they were going to do anything to follow up on the description I gave them.

I would like to tell you to warn the public about this perpetrator. He was Hispanic in origin and semi-bald. He had a stocky physique and was about five foot eight. He was driving a fairly new-looking well-maintained black truck, probably a 2000-2003 model.

He first tried stopping me on Wren Avenue near the apartments on Monte Bello by asking me if I needed a ride. He was very persistent. Even though I refused, he did not give up. He followed me for about a mile. Finally, around Orchard and Eighth Streets (a few blocks from the high school), he was standing outside his vehicle waiting for me. He tried to pull me into his car by dragging me by my arm.

I found myself repeating in my head, “I am not a victim,” as I defended myself. He hit me with his keys and a bad right hook in the eye. I was successful in getting away, but my concern is that someone else may not be as fortunate. And this is why I am writing this letter, to warn others to watch out for this guy!
