MORGAN HILL – A community outreach described as “overwhelming” is offering help to the family involved in an accident that killed a man and an unborn baby nearly two weeks ago in San Martin.
José Eleaza Jiménez-Perez, 33, of Morgan Hill, was killed Tuesday, Feb. 4 when the Geo Tracker he was driving was broadsided by a pickup driven by Douglas Ray Robeson.
Jiménez-Perez’s wife, Mari Carmen Barrios and the couple’s 4-year-old son, Edgar, were injured in the crash. In addition, Barrios was eight months pregnant. She had an emergency caesarian but the child died.
Robeson was intoxicated at the time of the accident, according to Terry Mayes, public information officer for the California Highway Patrol.
According to Janet Leach, of the Learning and Loving Education Center, Barrios regained consciousness over the weekend but remains recuperating in the Critical Care Unit of Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose.
“As you can imagine,” Leach said, “Mari Carmen is devastated by the lost of her husband and unborn child.
Leach confirmed that Barrios was an English student at the Learning and Loving Education.
The Learning and Loving Education Center and St. Catherine Church have also been collecting donations.
