Dear Editor:
January 22, 2003 marks the 30th anniversary of the United States Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, which protects the constitutional right of women to have a safe and legal abortion.
Every week, women who are faced with the dilemma of an unplanned pregnancy visit our local Planned Parenthood Mar Monte clinics. Many used contraceptives. However, the contraceptives failed. Others are victims of sexual assault or incest.
Some welcome the pregnancy and decide to carry it to term. Others choose to terminate the pregnancy by an elective abortion. Women have the fundamental right to control their bodies. A decision to terminate a pregnancy is not a political decision. It is a personal decision and it must be respected. Planned Parenthood Mar Monte firmly believes that each woman should continue to have the right to make her own reproductive choices, guided by her ethical beliefs, medical advice and personal circumstances.
As we pass the first 30 years of Roe v. Wade, we need to unite to support the open access to comprehensive reproductive health care that the decision allowed. We will and cannot go back to days where women died from back-alley abortions.
Accordingly, we steadfastly oppose all anti-choice judicial nominees in order to preserve reproductive freedom.
