The main traffic artery serving downtown Morgan Hill night spots was shut down for about three hours because of a bomb scare Saturday night.

Police responded to a report of a suspicious looking metal canister on the sidewalk outside Sinaloa Cafe at 17535 Monterey St. about 8:45 p.m., according to Sgt. Jerry Neumayer.

Local police were unable to determine if the canister, which resembled a five-gallon propane tank painted flat black, was dangerous, so they closed Monterey Street through downtown until the Sheriff’s Office’s bomb squad arrived to take a closer look. Neumayer said the bomb squad took x-rays of the canister and determined it was a propane tank. MHPD took custody of the canister.

Officers were unable to determine any criminal intent associated with the propane tank. Neumayer said the tank was likely misplaced, and could have fallen off a truck that was passing through town.
