Gilroy – The Gilroy High swim team may not have won Friday’s dual meet against the visiting Hollister Haybalers but the Mustangs did manage to post some more than satisfactory times.

“Our times were actually pretty fast in the bad weather,” said GHS head coach Tom Clark. “This was one of our fastest meets of the season so far, and it was good competition for us against Hollister. We had good efforts overall, some very good swims.”

The boys fell to the Haybalers 108-73 but Santiago Maciel’s performances in the 200 IM and the 100 freestyle were his best of the season and good enough to qualify as CCS times. Maciel had a time of 2:04.8 in the first event and a 50.8 in the second. Maciel took down Hollister’s David Smith in both races. Smith, who has been placing very well in some big events in recent weeks, was neck and neck with his Mustang opponent in the 100 free but Maciel pulled away with a burst of speed just before the line to edge the Haybaler.

“(Smith) pretty much made me swim faster today,” Maciel said. “We had a good race, he’s good competition.”

Lee Walton posted his best times of the year and took second place in both the 500 free and the 100 breast. Walton’s time of 1:05.08 in the 100 breast was just off the CCS qualifying time but he will likely be able to close the gap before the end of the season.

The girls suffered a 110-36 defeat at the hands of the ‘Baler swimmers but Alex Marra did manage to pull off a Mustang victory. Marra defeated Hollister’s Katie Bozetta in the 50 free with a time of 28.32 for Gilroy’s lone victory on the girls’ side.
