After two seasons in charge of the Gilroy High School boys varsity basketball team, Matt Tait will not return with the Mustangs next season.
“For now I am taking some time for family,” Tait said Tuesday. “I feel like I need to give the time and energy to my own kids right now.
“There will always be high school kids that want to be coached,” Tait added. “My kids will only be this size once.”
Tait led the Mustangs to a 23-26 overall record and 10-14 inside the Tri-County Athletic League. GHS qualified for the Central Coast Section playoffs during Tait’s first season at the helm (2010-11). The Mustangs topped Milpitas 68-58 in the first round before falling to Bellarmine 61-42 in the quarterfinals. GHS did not make the postseason last year.
“(Principal) Dr. (Marco) Sanchez, (athletic director Julie) Berggren were great. The boosters were amazing. It really is just about knowing what it takes to get the job done right and not knowing if I had that to give right now,” Tait said. “I want to make sure I am giving my all and, currently, that needs to be to my family.”
