Risky swimming

“My question is why does the city continue to let the young kids swim in that septic tank sewer hole down there at Christmas Hill Park? I went down there last night and there were a dozen or more swimming in there. Dogs swim in there, they probably all go potty in there. That’s got to be something else. Funny somebody doesn’t get hurt of get sick from that. Thank you very much. Ciao!”

Red Phone:

That’s quite a question you have there, good caller. The Red Phone believes the “septic tank sewer hole” you refer to that these children are swimming in is none other than Uvas Creek.

According to Gilroy Parks and Facilities Manager Bill Headley, the creek is not a designated swimming area. However, he said it what it really comes down to is that those who choose to swim there do so at their own risk.

And as for dogs doing their business in the creek, Headley said, “I’m not aware it’s any worse … than any other water channel.”

The Red Phone suggests people find another local swimming hole, preferably the pool at South Valley Middle School or Gilroy High. However, neither is open on the weekends.

Fixer upper

“I would like to know the status on fixing Santa Teresa Boulevard. It was supposed to be done, they were ahead of schedule for the Garlic Festival. … When is it going to be done? Everything’s paved but the cones are out still, for two weeks now. This is getting old and it needs to be taken care of soon. I’d appreciate an answer. Thank you.”

Red Phone:

You and many other Gilroy residents, Red Phone is sure. It is happy to let all know that Santa Teresa Boulevard was officially completed and all lanes were opened Friday.

City Transportation Engineer Don Dey added, however, that construction crews will likely be out in the area through August, working on any necessary maintenance issues.

If you missed it, see Friday’s Dispatch for ‘All Lanes of Santa Teresa to Open Today’ on page A3.

Freaky flyover

“Hello Red Phone. Having been in the military 51 years ago, what a surprise to be nearly scared out of our wits at about 10:30 (last) Friday morning. Young flyer, you must have friends or relatives in this town and wanted to let them know you are well and safe. I enjoyed seeing and hearing you on this one occasion. Do it again, if you must, but please stay safe and out of harm’s way. Let that be a warning to all who think of standing around doing nothing about the expansion of the South County Airport. Did you like that jet’s noise?”

Red Phone:

Thanks for the call.
