Veterans Day in Gilroy was a day of flags, uniforms, gun salutes, prayers, trumpets and memories for the more than 100 people gathered in front of the Veterans Memorial Building on Sixth Street. Scouts in blue and tan joined veterans who wore the caps and uniforms of their branch of service, as well as friends, relatives and community members to honor those who served in the military. The featured speaker was Gilroy Mayor Roland Velasco, a US Army veteran, who was named Vet of the Year by American Legion Post 217. “As veterans we are acutely aware of the sacrifices made by our service members, and we are equally aware of the cost of those sacrifices,” the mayor said. “Veterans Day isn’t just a day for veterans. It’s a day for all Americans.”
