What’s outstanding about her:
Mrs. Stern’s energy and enthusiasm for teaching science and her dedication to her students is the main reason she has been selected as Saint Mary School’s Teacher of the Week. She begins the seventh-grade year with a “Mission Impossible” where students have to use forensic evidence to figure out which staff member “took” the CD player out of the classroom. In this task, she develops the student’s curiosity, but keeps them focused on thinking critically and on hard evidence to solve the “crime.” Mrs. Stern’s legendary labs like the online frog dissection, dissection of cow hearts, cow eyes, cuttlefish and chicken wings are creative, and have become quite the memorable sensory experience for the whole school! Her field trips are also a favorite of students and parents alike. She takes her students to Lover’s Point in Monterey to experience the tide pools and to the Chabot Science Center for students to experience space mission emulation. She has been and continues to be instrumental in getting the school’s science lab built. She has the respect and admiration of her colleagues, school parents and her students.
