DEAR EDITOR:

I was pleased to read that Gilroy is able to increase the number of credentialed teachers. Although, more research is needed before you can assume that all non-credentialed teachers are not “quality” teachers. Most teachers have more education than the majority of professionals employed, yet the government in their infinite wisdom, believe that a standardized test determines if they are “qualified” (i.e., C.S.E.T. or M.S.A.T.)

We see the same problem facing our school systems. Does a test determine whether or not a child is “quality?”

Sounds absurd, but if you read between the lines, students are labeled and stereotyped because of this. Soon students will face the same scrutiny that teachers face. “Quality” is not the correct catch phrase, it should be “quantity” because that is all test publishers and government officials want to see – the quantity of test going up means more money for them.

Look at how much money it costs to take teacher examinations, test prep classes and books, and finally the cost to the state to support standardized testing that is racially and class driven. I do realize that your job is to make sure that information disseminated is free from bias and most importantly properly informs the public. Please look into the information before you agree to run information that is possibly damaging and incorrect.
