SALINAS – The Gilroy High boys tennis team entered two singles players and three doubles teams in Saturday’s MBL Finals at Hartnell College in Salinas.
The No. 1 senior doubles tandem of Tim Gallardo and Scott Denman (seeded No. 2 for the league tournament) went the furthest of any of their teammates – reaching the semifinals before being eliminated. After an opening 6-0, 6-1 thrashing of Live Oak’s Tad Christopher and Chris Laskodi, Gallardo and Denman took out North Salinas’ Vinh Pham and Darwin Fernandez in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. In their third match of the day, the Gilroy pair lost to Monterey’s Harsha Tumals and Brad Johnson.
In other doubles action, Gilroy’s Jacob Pniewski and Mark Heisy teamed up for the first time – winning their opening match against Live Oak’s Nick Matsomoto and Ryan Alexander, 6-3, 6-4 before losing to eventual champions Dimitri Cohen and Chase Clifton, of Monterey. The Mustangs’ final duo of Mike Faria and Tomas Carrillo never got out of the gates – losing a 6-4, 2-6, 0-6 three-setter to Salinas’ Jose Corial and James Herrera.
Senior Mike Campos reached the second round of singles play – eliminating Josh Whealton in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2 before falling to Palma’s big man John Pettit 0-6, 0-6. In addition, junior Robbie Marques won his first bout – topping Live Oak’s Nick Cotta 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 – but lost his next one – losing 4-6, 3-6 to Salinas’ Tim Centofanti.
