TENNIS: Ups and downs for CHS at league championships

Results covered each end of the spectrum for the Christopher High girls tennis team’s representatives at the Monterey Bay League championships this week.
No. 1-doubles, Nubia Juarez and Adena Chen, made it through Tuesday’s opening matches, picking up victories over the tandem from Pajaro Valley and Monterey later in the afternoon. The day’s finale against Monterey went three sets, with the CHS pair coming back from a one-set hole to eventually win in three sets.
However, the Cougars ran into the No. 1-seeded side from San Benito – Berenice Bribiesca and Cathy Frusetta – on Wednesday and met an end to the season.
On Day 1, Shelby O’Hara (No. 2-singles) got by her first opponent, Sarah Madison from the host school Salinas High, 6-4, 6-3, before being eliminated by San Benito’s Aubire Marshall.
Christopher’s No. 1-singles player Emily Barham, who had a bye through to the second round, suffered a difficult defeat in three sets.
Yvonne AuYeung and Liz Levan (No. 2-doubles) were ousted by San Benito’s Annie Tobias and Kelsey Slavich on Day 1.
“I am very pleased with the way the team is progressing,” CHS head coach Patrick McBrearty said. “Every player gets a little better every match. I am very positive about the possibilities for next year.”
CHS finished the regular season 7-3 in the Pacific Division, falling one match win shy of sharing a league title with Alvarez.
