GILROY – Returning seven seniors to its roster this season, an experienced Gilroy High varsity tennis team defeated Christopher High 6-1 on Wednesday.
The Mustangs’ doubles, which was a strong suit for head coach Jami Reynolds last season, picked up where they left off and swept all three doubles matches – losing just one game between the three.
“They kind of have the routine down,” Reynolds said of her veteran squad.
Melanie Morales and Elaina Vasquez toppled Sierra Smith and Kayla Martinez, 6-0, 6-0 while the No. 2 pairing of Lindsey Holt and Sami Holder also won 6-0, 6-0. Megan Meazell and Alejandra Pacheco-Ramirez grabbed a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
The Cougars secured their lone point of the afternoon thanks to a hard-fought victory from No. 1-singles player Emily Barham over Jennifer Kwong.
“I believe the girls had a good time and learned a great deal about where we need to improve,” CHS head coach Patrick McBrearty said.”
After Barham took the early advantage with a 6-3 first-set win, Kwong regained the momentum with a 6-1 win in set two to force the match into a third-set tiebreaker.
“Their No. 1-player is really good,” Reynolds said. “That was a fun match to watch.”
Barham outlasted Kwong 10-8 to take the match and earn the team point.
No. 2-singles player Satthea Khay, No. 3 Joanne Lo and No. 4 Amiti Munshi each notched team points for the Mustangs.
