Gilroy is family. Gilroy is home. Like any big family, we have
our warts, our squabbles, our heartaches and our scars. But we also
have a generous hometown where simple goodness is prevalent, a
sense of community is a part of everyday life, a geographic
distinctness ensures a unique identity and beautiful surroundings
are abundant.

Life is good in Gilroy. That should be part of our Thanksgiving Day grace. When turkeys are needed to feed the less fortunate, when coats are needed to warm the poor, when community members are needed to comfort the grieving and when volunteers are called upon to make it work for a good cause, Gilroyans are there.
Gilroyans are givers.
We have so many good people it’s difficult to know where to start in giving thanks. There are marvelous teachers who take extra time and extra trouble on a daily basis to challenge and educate our children. We have service clubs with members who take the commitment to serve their community literally. We have people who delight in helping others learn the joy of theater and the arts. We have coaches who make a difference in the lives of young people and who insist upon good sportsmanship. We have friendly faces at coffee shops who greet you and brighten the morning. We have neighbors who will help in times of need, whether it’s cooking a meal or caring for a beloved pet. We have people who help others realize the dream of home ownership.
So, as we approach the holiday that is the quintessence of America, let’s celebrates the bounty, the beauty and the basic goodness that exists for all of us in calling Gilroy our home. And in recognizing that, it becomes clear that the responsibility to make Gilroy an even better place in the future belongs to each of us. Here’s to the future of Gilroy, may we remain a distinct community that cares for each other and values service for the many ways that it strengthens and unites our town.
