Varsity contenders: Hollister (only one win by less than 10 points, won the Aptos Classic by beating the home team by 23), Aptos (traditionally strong, easily won Salinas Challenge), Monterey (beat Palma by 19, Watsonville by 26), Gilroy (played tough schedule, narrowly lost at Aptos, has home-court advantage)

ABOUT BOB HAGEN
Just who is the tournament’s namesake?
Simply put, legendary coach Bob Hagan “made Gilroy High School one of the best, year after year.” That’s how his honorary plaque inside the GHS gym reads.
That’s how his record reads, too.
As a coach from 1950 until his untimely death in 1977, Hagan compiled a 457-209 record. He led the Mustangs to 14 league championship and four regional titles.
For his accomplishments, Hagan was awarded league coach of the year eight times (’54, ’57, ’58, ’62, ’63, ’64, ’73, ’77). He was also honored as California coach of the year in 1973 and ’76 and named national coach of the year in ’73.
