It looks like The Holdup – a band based out of San Jose whose bass player Kyle Christensen grew up and graduated from high school in Gilroy – has the Midas touch.

The group’s third album “Still Gold” released Monday is an affirmation to the sparkly roller coaster of success the group has experienced since their debut album “Stay Gold” was released in March 2009.

“Still Gold” is the group’s third album and is currently the No. 1 downloaded album in the iTunes reggae category.

No. 2?

Bob Marley, followed by a larger-than-life list of genre big-deals like Collie Buddz and Damian Marley.

Overall “Still Gold” is No. 58 on iTunes and pulling rank above albums by the Black Eyed Peas, Katy Perry, Rascal Flatts, Jack Johnson, P!nk and Chris Brown, to name a modest handful.

Christensen, 24, is one of four players in the band, which blends reggae, hip hop, pop and rock to create a sound that has fans grooving, concert tickets selling and record labels doling out some serious offers. The band parks it in San Jose but is frequently on the road.

“We just got home from a tour with Iration,” wrote Kyle in an email sent earlier today. “Then went straight to finishing the album!”

Iration’s album “Time Bomb” is currently No. 12 in the iTunes reggae genre.

“I talked to him yesterday,” said Kyle’s mother LeeAnne Christensen who lives in Gilroy and is giddy with excitement for her son.

“Other then that, I haven’t spoken to him. I’m his mother and I don’t get to talk to him that often,” she laughed.

Things have been crazy, she said – The Holdup hasn’t signed with a label yet but big league record companies are courting the group.

“It’s kind of like a free agent, a football or baseball player,” she said. “Whoever is going to give them the best deal and benefits is who they’re going to go with.”

LeeAnne anticipates 2011 being a monumental year for The Holdup, which was also named “Best New Reggae Artist for 2010” by iTunes.

“They have so many people watching them right now,” she said. “We all want it. They deserve it.”

Currently, iTunes is offering a free single from The Holdup to download called “Miss You.”
