There are 3 key positions that a player needs to be in at impact to ensure the ball will get up in the air – weight position, hand position and shaft position.

WEIGHT POSITION

To ensure that the ball is struck on the downswing you must slide your weight laterally to the left leg during the downswing. With your weight on your left leg, the very bottom of your swing will be slightly in front of the ball. This ensures that you will strike the ball first as the club is on the decending arc of the swing. Striking it on this arc puts backspin on the ball which gets it to lift in the air.

HAND POSITION

As the club is on the downward arc, your hands should be slightly in front of the ball and slightly in front of the club head. This also helps strike the back of the ball on a descending arc thus putting backspin on the ball. The shaft of the club and the left arm should be a straight line at the point the club head is making contact with the back of the ball.

SHAFT POSITION

As you are making contact with the ball with your weight on your left leg and hands ahead of the ball the shaft should now be pointing at your front hip. This left side control will help you take a divot after impact hitting the ball first then immediatly taking the divot.

These three points all insure that you hit the ball on the downsiwng, putting backspin on the ball and thus getting it to lift in the air.

Remember, when all else fails, take a lesson, you”ll be surprised how much we can help.
