GILROY – Chants of “Blackie! Blackie!” sounded out in Wheeler Auditorium Saturday, as 15-year-old Gilroy native Elizabeth Rodriguez was propelled by the hometown crowd chanting her nickname to score a victory over Brenda Medeona in Saturday’s Third Annual Throwdown in Garlic Town.

Winning the semi-main event, which was later recognized as the Fight of the Night, Rodriguez was one of four Left 2 Right Boxing Club members to win fights on the 15-bout card, which was put together by L2R trainer Jerry Rodriguez.

“I was impressed with the outcome of it all,” Jerry Rodriguez said.

“This show was the best one yet.”

Gilroy’s Jacob Hernandez, 20, lost a “razor-thin decision” to Roman Morales in the main event, said Jerry Rodriguez.

“If you ask me, I have to say Jacob won the fight,” he added.

The card featured predominantly local fighters from Gilroy and Salinas.

Other results included: L2R’s Joseph Barnes, 9, came up short to Jesus Abhahza (Ortiz Boxing Club); Manny Moreno, 14, topped Fernando Barajas, 13, of San Martin Boxing Club; Lujans Boxing Club’s Pedro Medrom, 12, beat Diego Castillo of L2R; Silver and Black Boxing Club’s Lorenzo Jaso, 18, overcame Brian Salazar of L2R; Jackie Gomez, 12, of L2R scored a win over Isabell Renteria (Lujans Boxing Club); and Ceaser Gomez, 15, of L2R stopped Top Contenders’ Timothy Wooten, 17, with a body in the second round.
