FREMONT – Clutch hitting and strong pitching helped the Silicon Valley Glory 18-and-under girls softball team to a NorCal Championship at the USSSA Fall State Championship tournament held in Fremont over the weekend.
Heading into the ninth inning of the semifinal game, the Glory found themselves locked in a 0-0 tie with the California Magic. As per the international tiebreaker rule, beginning in the eighth, a runner starts the inning at second base.
With Gabby Gomez at second, the Glory’s Michelle Sosa roped a line-drive single to advance Gomez to third, who was able to score after an Alissa Castro base hit.
Nicole Lobato continued her impressive outing by holding the Magic in their half of the inning. Lobato struck out 10 in the complete-game effort.
The Glory and Magic hooked up again in the final. This time, however, there were a few more offensive sparks.
The Glory broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning courtesy of a Tori Lobato RBI-double and RBI-singles from Melanie Morelos and Sosa, giving Silicon Valley a 5-3 cushion and the eventual win.
