Festival Refuse

“I don’t mind seeing people coming from afar to the Garlic Festival, but I don’t like to clean up the garbage that they throw in our lawns and also our bushes. Would it be possible to provide garbage cans along the avenue for next year’s festival? That would be greatly appreciated by not only myself but also my neighbors. Thank you.”

Red Phone:

The Red Phone spoke to Joann Kessler, Assistant Executive Director of the Garlic Festival.

Kessler said the refuse committee for the festival cleans around the perimeter, which is not only in the park but also around the park. A group of volunteers called the “Gilroy Gators” clean 10th Street to the high school to Wren Avenue, and they also clean the levee.

Kessler said putting garbage cans along the streets is an impractical solution, and since the location of the noted problem is not apparent, it is difficult to know if the area is currently on a perimeter cleaning route. Kessler said if she knew exactly where there seems to be a problem, then she could look further into addressing it, call her at 842-1625.

Missing Stop Sign

“What is going on with the stop sign at Uvas Parkway and Wren? The ‘stop’ is still painted on the street, the warning sign that there is an upcoming stop sign, but there is no stop sign as you turn on to Wren. Are they removing it or is it just missing? Sunday I came very close to getting hit there as I stopped but the car behind me almost didn’t. She veered off the road to the right to avoid the collision.”

Red Phone:

Red Phone contacted Gilroy Traffic Engineer Don Dey and he informed it that there should be a stop sign at that location.

“I will inform the Operations Division so the stop sign can be replaced,” Dey said. “Thank you for bringing the missing stop sign to our attention.” Nice job good caller, thanks for putting safety first.

Animal Control Inconvenient

“I was just reading your article about the animal control issue and I totally agree. I was just talking to one of the animal control officers here in Gilroy and he said that they have to take the animals all the way to the Santa Clara Humane Society, that they can’t drop them off in San Martin because San Martin won’t accept them. They always say they’re full. That’s ridiculous for the residents of Gilroy to have to make the trip and not to drop them off in San Martin. Thanks again, bye.”

Red Phone:

Thanks for taking the time to call in your thoughts.
