Farmers’ market debut

For those of you who forgot to mark your calendars, the inaugural “Spice of Life Downtown Gilroy Festival & Market” kickoff event is slated from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in the two vacant lots near the corner of Monterey and Seventh streets. From then on, the market will take place every Sunday in the same location from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday’s festival will feature live music, produce, arts, crafts, food and face painting for children.

Historical Society walking tour

The Gilroy Historical Society will hold its monthly walking tour on Saturday at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park on First Street. From Civil War veterans to Iraq/ Afghanistan war veterans, this ten-acre cemetery yields important clues to our development as a community. Meet at the fountain in the center at 10 a.m. Reservations for the free tour are appreciated by calling the Gilroy Museum at 846-0446.

Benefit concerts at Methodist church

Local music teacher Andoni Bundros has put together a local music series of concerts at 7:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Gilroy at 7600 Church St. Saturday features Gilroy musician Tomas Carrillo and San Francisco musician, J.J. Schultz; June 18 features Adriel, Reese Douglas and July 2 features Erma Kyriakos, Candace Fazzio. Concerts are free. Donations cover musician travel expenses.

‘Curtains’ open at SV Civic Theater

South Valley Civic Theater presents “Curtains”, the whodunit musical comedy, at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays running Friday through June 11 and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday and June 5 at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse, 17090 Monterey St., Morgan Hill. Details: 842-SHOW or svct.org.

Singing finals at Arteaga’s

Arteaga’s Food Center will hold the finals of its singing competition from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the store at 6906 Chestnut St. Vote for your favorite singer. There will be free food, raffles and prizes. Details: 847-7542 or arteagasinc.com.
