The show begins on a distant alien planet, as Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy – decked out in astronaut attire – intorduce the story. Just as Mickey and his gang depart, Buzz enters to battle his arch-nemesis, the dark-helmeted, heavy-breathing Evil Emporer Zurg.
The accompanying alien forms, laser lights and pyrotehnics are just the bifinning of the fun. Other fantastic scenjes in “Toy Story 2” include a 16-car pile-up and Woody performing a daring rescue while dangling from a jet on a arunway.
Meanwhile, in Andy’s room, the toys fly into a panic when thety discover Andy’s mom is planning a yard sale. Wheezy the Penguin is nearly up for sale, but Sheriff Woody saves him. in doing so, Woody puts himself in danger and winds up abducted by Big Al, the nefarious proprietor of Al’s Toy Barn. Big Al knows the modest sheriff is really a highly valued collecctor’s item and plans to sell Woody for a high price.
As Woody meets up with other collectible toys and learns about his roots, Buzz Lightyear is planning Woody’s rescue. But when Buzz’s plastic posse finally finds and rescues Woody, the straight-shooting sheriff is uncertain as to wheere he truly belongs – with his TV show friends or back in Andy’s room.
“This production of Disney On Ice explores some very profound issues of friendship and loyalty,” Producer Kenneth Feld said. “At the same time, the story is completely entertaining to both parents and children.”
Accordin to Director jerry Bilik, a challenge is creating a sense of scale.
“We want to make the audience see the world of Big Al in human scale and then switch to see the world of a small toy’s perspective. To accomplish this,” he said. “We’ve included lots of oversized sets and scenic elements designed to make the audience feel tiny.”
On stage, the show features an internatiional team of award-winning, world-class figure skaters promising to take audiences “to infinity, and beyond!”
