On Thursday, in a dual meet against North Salinas, Velasquez lived up to the nickname.

In the Mustangs’ 85-49 team victory, Velasquez took first in three distance events, the 800m (2:08.7), the 1600m (4:44.3) and the 3200m (11:44).

“He’s a real tough athlete,” Zvigzne said.

“He would have run another event if he could have.”

Thrower Robert Best also had a good day at the track. He threw a personal best of 160 feet, 8 inches in the discus to move up

to No. 2 in the Central Coast Section. He also won the shot put with a throw of 50–8.

“He keeps just getting better and better,” Zvigzne said. “There was a tailwind. He was very happy with his results.”

Joseph Gutierrez continued to show his sprinting dominance in dual meets. He took first in the 100m and 200m.

Allan Schmidt and Miles Amodeo dominated the hurdles events. Schmidt took the top spot in the 100m high hurdles (16.8 seconds) and second in the 300m intermediate hurdles (49.0 seconds) while Amodeo won the 300m intermediate hurdles (45.6 seconds) and took second in the 100m high hurdles (17.2 seconds).

The 400m relay team of Brandon Cortez, Dan Micali, Chris Velasco and Gutierrez took first with a time of 45.2 seconds. The mile relay team of Jacob Trujillo, Allan Chan, Derrin Amerson and Richard Tover also took first with a time of 3:44.

Other top finishers for the boys were Christian Cania (triple jump, 39–2 ft.), Frankie Valadez (high jump, 5–10 ft., 4th in CCS), Tover (400m, 54.9 seconds) and Chan (1600m, 5:05).

On the girls’ side, thrower Sierra Barroza won the discus and the shot put with distances of 109–5 and 28–10.5, respectively.

Distance runner Stephanie Radke took first in both the 800m (2:37) and 1600m (5:50).
