Gilroy – Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is sending representatives to lead a community roundtable on transportation today at the Casa De Fruta conference center in Hollister that could decide the future of the interchange between Route 152 and 156, east of Gilroy.

The dreaded interchange, which can back up eastbound traffic heading toward the Central Valley for miles, is one of the main arteries for Hollister and Los Banos residents who commute to work in Silicon Valley, and for weekend travelers heading out of town. The intersection has got the attention of the California Transportation Commission and the CTC is considering it for funding from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s proposal to transfer $1.3 billion to the state Transportation Investment Fund in 2005-06.

“This is just a chance for us to talk about how important this is so we can secure state and federal dollars,” said Don Gage, Santa Clara County supervisor and Valley Transit Authority board member.

Gage plans to attend the roundtable and will be joined by other local officials, including Gilroy Mayor Al Pinheiro and Morgan Hill Mayor Dennis Kennedy.

The funding will come from a proposal to transfer $1.3 billion to the State Transportation Investment Fund in 2005-06. Part of the May revisions of the 2005-06 state budget included the reinstatement of Proposition 42, which passed in 2002, and allows for the use of funds from gasoline sales tax to improve road safety, mass transit and reduce road congestion, according to the Governor’s office.
