A superior court judge continued the trial setting conference for Pete Joseph Valdez III until next month, another slight delay for the defendant accused of trying to kill a Gilroy police officer more than a year ago.

The conference was scheduled for Monday, but Valdez will instead formally identify his counsel Feb. 9 at the Santa Clara County Superior Courthouse in San Martin, according to Amy Cornell, public information officer for Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office. Both sides also expect to set a trial date then for sometime in the spring at the earliest, according to attorneys involved.

Berndt Ingo Brauer has served as Valdez’s private attorney throughout the preliminary hearings, but he said earlier this month that his client could choose another lawyer. It has been 14 months since police arrested Valdez, and last month Judge Hector Ramon held the defendant accountable for the attempted murder of a Gilroy police officer and three other felony counts. He was arraigned shortly afterward, and now both sides await the trial.
