Operation Interdependence asks for support
Gilroy – A nonprofit group devoted to lifting the spirits of troops abroad needs extra hands for its letter writing campaign.

Each month, the local branch of nonprofit Operation Interdependence sends 2,500 individual care packages to military personnel in Iraq and other war-torn areas overseas. The packages include snacks, toiletries and a note of encouragement.

“It’s no so much the goodies that are included in the baggies, it’s the letters that (the troops) go for first,” said Karen Humber, an OI organizer with a son in the Marines. “We’re sending out about 50 boxes a month now with 50 baggies each, so we’re sending 2,500 boxes a month.”

The group has plenty of care packages, she said, but is running short on notes. The group is asking residents to help write messages to send abroad.

“The letter can be as simple as a child’s drawing or a simple note of encouragement,” Humber explained.

One letter from an elementary school student so moved OI organizers that they include it as their e-mail tag line.

“My name is Elizabeth and I am six years old,” wrote one girl as part of a class assignment. “My family and I have filled this little bag with many things just for you. There are things in this bag which you can see, like toothpaste, soap, lotion, and shampoo. But there are many things you cannot see. My heart, my love, my respect, and most importantly, my prayers for you to return home safely to your family very soon.”

Residents can drop off letters at three locations in Gilroy: First Street Coffee Exchange at 1211 First St., Sue’s Coffee Roasting Company at 7501 Monterey St., and Nob Hill Foods at 777 First St.
