Dear Editor:
The recent Croy Fire was very unfortunate and a true tragedy for those who lost their homes and property in the Croy Road area. However as is often the case there were some positive notes during that period of stress and uncertainty. People and organizations readily stepped forward to help in any way they possibly could.
The citizens and the City of Gilroy stepped forward in a big way. City staff immediately helped us arrange for extended use of Christmas Hill Park, an ideal facility for our incident base of operations. The cooperation and assistance received from the mayor’s office, Fire Department, Police Department, Parks and Recreation Department was invaluable.
The outpouring of support from the citizens of Gilroy was humbling. Letters, posters, and banners showing support and thanks. Schoolchildren, mothers, and fathers delivering cookies, cakes, Frisbees. Local business people donating foodstuffs, coffee, and chiropractic care. Waves, thumb-ups, friendly horn honks.
Firefighters from all over the state, many with over 25 years of experience, repeatedly remarked they had never seen this magnitude of thanks and support. Thank you all and we are proud and honored to be associated with the people of Gilroy.
