TUESDAY ROUNDUP: GHS volleyball survives in five against PV

The Gilroy High boys volleyball team responded to its first Tri-County Athletic League loss with a five-set win (21-25, 25-22, 25-21, 23-25, 15-6) triumph over Pajaro Valley on Tuesday in Gilroy.
“The boys played well against a good team,” GHS coach Craig Martin said.
Connor Escobar drove home 19 kills, Luke Otteson had 17 kills and both Jonny Lester and Lucas Gravell contributed nine kills. Also, Voltaire Valencia added six aces and Greg Spellman pushed 49 assists.
The win allowed the Mustangs (12-8 overall, 7-1 TCAL) to keep pace with San Benito (12-2 overall, 7-1 TCAL) at the top of the Valley Division standings. GHS defeated the Balers earlier in the season.
The Mustangs are on the road Thursday at Gonzales.
• The Christopher High volleyball team needed a set to get settled against TCAL cross-division opponent Monterey on Tuesday night. However, despite less lopsided results in sets two and three, the Cougars fell to the Coastal Division leader Toreadors 25-13, 25-21, 25-22.
SOFTBALL
Notre Dame softball came into Tuesday’s tilt with host Gilroy High on a four-game losing skid. But, the Spirits managed to move past the Mustangs, 4-2, further proving the Tri-County Athletic League is as wide open as ever this season.
Six of the seven teams already have one loss in league play. San Benito, which Gilroy (5-2 overall, 1-1 TCAL) faces Thursday, is 2-0.
“We lost our focus a bit tonight,” GHS manager Julie Berggren said. “But I’m confident we will play tough on Thursday.”
The Mustangs-Balers contest is in Hollister and has a scheduled 4:30 p.m. start time.
BASEBALL
A difficult stretch reached five consecutive losses for the Gilroy High baseball team after a 10-1 loss to visiting North Salinas on Tuesday.
The Mustangs (3-10 overall, 1-8 Tri-County Athletic League) are stuck at the bottom looking up at the rest of the league midway through the season. Since starting the year 2-0, GHS has dropped nine of its last 10 contests.
GAVILAN
Ohlone College handed Gavilan baseball its most one-sided defeat of the season, 11-0, on Tuesday in Gilroy.
The Rams (13-11, 6-6) have now lost three straight Coast Conference games – easily the roughest patch of the year thus far.
