Police arrested two suspected gang members very early Sunday morning after they allegedly attacked a Gilroy man with bats and bottles before throwing a shopping cart on him, sending him to the hospital with major injuries, police said.
George Palacios Jr. and Andres Espinoza, both 29, “butted” into an argument the 27-year-old victim from Gilroy was having with an unidentified female in front of a house on Fairview Drive near Hanna Street. The apparent interruption turned violent for an unknown reason, but witnesses helped police find the suspects who fled to a residence on the same block. Outside, officers overheard one of the suspects say something incriminating, and after they entered the home with probable cause, an officer found Palacios hiding in a closet.
“Palacios was cowering inside of a bedroom closet,” Sgt. Jim Gillio said, quoting from the report. “Both parties involved in this crime have gang ties, but the motivation for the attack is still under investigation.”
Police charged both men with assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit a felony, but neither was in custody Tuesday, according to the Santa Clara County Department of Corrections. The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office had yet to press charges, and it was unclear whether Palacios and Espinoza posted their respective bails, in which case their arraignment will be delayed, according to a DA spokesperson.
