When Kaiden Gonzales filled out his March Madness bracket, no one could’ve anticipated how well he’d do — especially for a first grader.
Gonzales, 7, did better than most sports experts, finishing 21st out of more than 15 million brackets submitted to the Yahoo Sports College Basketball Tourney Pick’em challenge.
The first grader at Glen View Elementary correctly picked the Final Four by his own accord. He chose Florida because he likes alligators, the University of Kentucky because its logo features a ‘K’ like his name and the NCAA Champion University of Connecticut due in part to his recent adoption of Happy the Husky from Build-A-Bear Workshop.
He credited choosing Wisconsin because he’s learning about Georgia O’Keefe in Gina Checkouras’ class and she hails from there.Â
Gonzales’ achievement has been recognized as far away as Hawaii where he was interviewed for the Sunrise edition of Hawaii News Now.Â
His mother, Gena Gonzales, said their family is full of sports fans and Kaiden has participated in fantasy baseball and football leagues in the past.Â
Out of 10 family members, Kaiden is the youngest and the family spent time looking up all the mascots for his and his brother’s brackets.Â
