Getting Out: Find solitude at Modoc National Forest
We parked in front of the US Forest Service building in Alturas, Modoc County's only incorporated city. The shiny new building was a stark contrast to the rest of sleepy Alturas which appeared to be frozen in the 1950's. At just under 4,000 square miles, Modoc County is the twelfth largest county in California, yet it has a population of only 9,147; a number that has been steadily declining.
A hidden gem in Watsonville
After years of writing this column, I sometimes feel a little cocky thinking I know virtually all the nearby parks and preserves. A couple weekends ago, I led a trip into the remote east side of Henry W. Coe State Park. A woman who was on the trip told me about a preserve I had never heard of in Watsonville that she loves and hikes regularly. So much for my comprehensive knowledge.

After the tragic shootings at a Sikh temple in Illinois earlier this month, many people seem to have questions about this religion. Sikh men are often confused with Muslims because they both often have facial hair and wear turbans. Although Sikhism is a major world faith (20 million members, at least 250,000 in California, including more than 50,000 in the Bay Area), most people may not know much about this faith.
