GETTING OUT: Effort yields rewards well worth it
Apparently, hell has frozen over. I do not have first-hand knowledge of this – not yet anyway. But recently, something so incomprehensible happened that there is little doubt in my mind about the frigid conditions down below.
Getting into the groove – at any age
I wandered into Station 55 in Gilroy one night not long ago and discovered a band I had never heard before. As they launched into “Chain of Fools,” by Aretha Franklin and “Superstition,” by Stevie Wonder, I couldn’t believe how good they were. Had I suddenly been transported back in time?

U.S. women’s soccer team aims to win our hearts again in Olympics
A year ago this week, Americans gathered around TV sets and fell in love with Abby, Megan, Christie, Alex, Shannon, Ali and Hope. The spunky U.S. women's national soccer team, with its superb athleticism and never-say-die attitude, added sizzle to the July sports doldrums.

One violin tune that inspires real sympathy
Anyone who has witnessed the students in the violin program at Antonio Del Buono Elementary School perform has to marvel at the discipline and talent. There are “wee” little ones who intently pluck the strings and slide across the instrument and there are the “older” students who are practiced and can “feel” the music. The program, born in 1999 and founded by teacher Lori Franke, is on the chopping block. Half the budget will vanish. That’s $17,000 gone. So, MayorAl and good guy garlic chefs Sam Bozzo and Gene Sakahara are throwing a dinner at 6 p.m. Friday (tonight) at the IFDES Lodge-Portuguese Hall at 250 Old Gilroy St. Call (650) 305-0168 for tickets or buy at the door. It’s $25 pasta, bread, salad and the amazing young violinists – plus the good feeling in your stomach that you get when you lend a hand.
