Perhaps it’s time to change Dream Team approach in basketball
Lamar Odom, traded last week from Dallas to the Los Angeles Clippers, informed USA Basketball on Tuesday that he won't be available to play for the national team in the London Olympics.
Serena Williams serves her way into Wimbledon final
WIMBLEDON, England – Serena Williams served her first ace in the first game of her Wimbledon semifinal match Thursday against second-seeded Victoria Azarenka. It was up the middle, and it raised a dust ball on Centre Court. And it was a trend-setter.
Oh where, oh where should those outlet dollars go?
Coldest Gilroy Fourth of July in my memory. Geez, it felt like early November with the wind whistling over the west mountains with chilly gusts rustling the trees. Meanwhile, most of the nation sweltered in 100-degreeish heat and awful humidity. The cool breeze didn’t stop the illegal fireworks dumbkopfs who were out in seemingly greater force than usual. Something unfortunate is going to happen – an apartment building on fire, or a child hit with an errant bottle rocket – and that will be the flashpoint argument for those who want to ban fireworks altogether in Gilroy. And, again, the minority will tyrannize the majority who enjoy the legal fireworks and the show at the high school.
How Much is Too Much?
A recent study published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine reported that too much running may actually be harmful. The report gathered publicly available reports of deaths during or shortly after all known Marathons in the US from 2000 to 2009. There have been other studies that have come to this conclusion as well. Most of these deaths occurred because of heart attacks and mostly among men.

Devices keep pets, people safe in car
They’re selling like hotcakes in New Jersey, and someday soon they’ll be doing the same in California. These are automobile pet-safety devices; ways to keep your pet (and you) safe while you drive down the road. New Jersey and several other states already have distracted driving laws that prohibit a loose animal in the car. That’s right. No more Fluffy on your lap as you go to the post office or grocery store. Hawaii, Connecticut and Arizona also prohibit this. Rhode Island and a few other states are close behind in their push to eliminate the dangers of distracted driving with a pet. As one official put it, “Not all driving distractions ring or beep. Some of them bark.”
Life lessons learned while making Calvin’s quilt
Recently a resurgence has occurred in the art of quilt making. And far be it from me to let anything re-surge without me.
Summer is perfect time to sip a little wine
I love summertime when the weather calls for relaxing on the patio with friends, sipping a chilled glass of wine and watching families of hummingbirds at the feeder.
U.S. track stars ready for battle; Jamaican team will provide stiff competition
Almost lost in the commotion over the 100-meter runoff that didn't materialize between Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh at the U.S. Olympic trials was an array of world-class races and enough noteworthy leaps and bounds to suggest the team will come close to its goal of 30 medals at the London Games.
GETTING OUT: El Corte de Madera is full of ‘treats’
High in the peninsula hills, above Redwood City and Woodside, El Corte de Madera Open Space Preserve is another peaceful sanctuary along Skyline Boulevard. El Corte de Madera Creek and Lawrence Creek, both born from springs near the road, descend through the preserve's 2,821 thickly forested acres on the way to San Gregorio Creek and the Pacific Ocean.
